Subway America plans to double its number of sandwich bars in Britain to 2010 by the end of the decade. Last year the company had 3,500 more outlets in America than McDonalds’s but overall sales at the biggest burger outlets are four times higher than at Subway. Now the company is seeking to overtake McDonald’s on this side of the Atlantic. Subway has already beaten the burger chain to the number one spot in Northern Ireland. Subway now has 21,000 outlets in 73 countries with sales of £5bn. The company is privately owned and founder, Fred DeLuca’s, stake is said to be worth about £1bn.
