Greggs is planning to re-open 20 sites in Newcastle on 4 May, and hopes to have 700 sites open by 1 July. In a letter to staff, CEO Roger Whiteside said the business would carry out a “controlled trial” in 20 shops in the Newcastle area staffed by “retail volunteers” from the business. The trial re-opening will see stores offering a limited range and shorter opening hours. Greggs plans to open for two weeks before assessing how it went, but it plans for the shops to remain open.

Greggs has no plans to slow its rapid expansion, despite opening a net total of 97 new stores last year. The business recently increased supply chain capacity to allow it to operate 2,500 outlets, but CEO Roger Whiteside told MCA he believes the total number of Greggs outlets could grow “well beyond” that figure in the future. “We know it’s well beyond 2,500,” he said. “Because we don’t know a final number we just release the next number when we come close to the last one we released. So at 1,500 we said 2,000, now we are at 2,000 we are saying 2,500. So pick a number, we just don’t know it.

Encouragingly for most, MCA predicts that 2020 will see stronger net physical increases in store portfolios across the majority of leading operators.MCA’s Operator Data Index includes over 350 branded operators with five or more outlets at December 2019. These stretch across the full spectrum of the market and account for close to 27,000 outlets which claimed modest overall year on year growth of just under 1% in 2019. We are expecting this growth rate to double to 2% in December 2020, with over 500 net new outlets to open, equating to 11 per week.
