Kamps, one of the leading bakery and café chains in Germany, is planning to make its UK debut before the end of the year, M&C Report understands.

The company, which operates c550 sites across Germany, is understood to have signed a master franchise agreement with Culford Ventures to operate a number of sites in the UK, with the first planned for central London this October.

It is thought that the first site will open under the group’s food-on-the-go Backstube concept, which is aimed at outlets in prime city locations with high footfall such as shopping centres, railway stations or airports.

The group, which was formed in 1982, is led by managing director Jaap Schalken, who led a management buy-out of the business backed by ECM Equity Capital in August 2010.

In 2009 the group launched its first Backstube site. It hopes to be operating 100  Backstube by 2015.
