Karen Jones: Why is it so important that hospitality wholeheartedly supports NHS Test and Trace?

    2020-08-28T06:55:00Z

So it’s a Bank Holiday weekend, pay day for many and the last EOTHO on Bank Holiday Monday. Many of our restaurants and pubs across the UK will be very busy and it seems an opportune moment to remind ourselves of the vital importance of all our places fully supporting NHS Test and Trace. Why is it so important that hospitality wholeheartedly supports NHS Test and Trace? Because hospitality offers safe spaces for people to enjoy being with friends and family. Because we are often at the centre of our communities and high streets. We have a real responsibility to keep our customers, our teams and our communities safe and well. NHS Test and Trace is a powerful way to do just that: collecting and providing the information to help break the chain of transmission and control the virus.

S.A. Brain CEO Alistair Darby: Industry must prove it’s not 'dirty, germ-ridden'

    2020-07-30T07:27:00Z

In classing hospitality behind non-essential retail in its reopening strategy, the Government has enabled the idea that pubs and restaurants are high-risk spaces to return to, S.A. Brain CEO Alistair Darby has said. Speaking as part of MCA’s The Conversation, Darby shared his frustration that delaying the sector’s reopening – hospitality spaces in Wales are still prohibited from opening inside until 3 August – has “created the idea in many people’s minds that pubs and restaurants are dangerous places to go.”

Big fat stats put the obesity debate back on the menu

    2020-07-29T06:35:00Z

There are times everyone needs a juicy bacon cheeseburger, a big portion of chips, a three piece KFC, a pepperoni pizza, lots of chocolate, a few scoops of ice cream or some crisps. Not altogether obviously, that would be far too delicious. But individually, and as an occasional treat, where’s the harm? The trouble is the UK has long suffered from a lack of restraint. Couple that with our love of takeaways and a national diet rooted in stodgy classics and we have reached a point where the government estimates that 63% of adults in England are overweight or obese. It says one in three kids leaves primary school overweight or obese. Obesity related illness costs the NHS over £6bn every year. Those are big fat stats.

Editor’s Opinion: Hang tight and plan your return

    2020-04-20T07:25:00Z

The coronavirus continues to wreak havoc. It’s claimed hundreds of thousands of lives around the world and numbers continue to rise. As dreadful as that is, the long term socio-economic impact is more disturbing. The virus has created a level of disruption to health, society, and the economy that’s never happened before, outside of wartime. And while there is plenty of speculation on how life in general may get back to normal post-lockdown, with vaguely optimistic or pessimistic dates floating around, there is no clarity on how or when this might end.

    Steve Gotham: Contrasting coronavirus communications

    2020-04-03T07:51:00Z

MCA’s Operator Data Index includes over 350 eating & drinking out chains with five outlets or more. We estimate these businesses generated a combined turnover of almost £27bn in 2019 – quite what this comparative will equate to in 2020 when the coronavirus dust eventually settles is a scary prospect. Many of these businesses have temporarily closed all operations, while a number are gallantly soldiering on with delivery or takeaway from selected locations only. Of those businesses still trading in some form, it is useful to review their online messages on how they are dealing with the coronavirus. Certainly, there are differences in how they are looking to both inform and reassure consumers.
