The European Food Safety Authority has conducted a study that claims the production of foie gras is pain-free for the birds that are force fed feed until the liver distends.
It said a careful study of the nervous system of ducks and geese showed they did not feel either stress or suffering when being force-fed.
The Daily Telegraph’s Spy column wonders whether international economic rulings aiming to ban the production of the delicacy, hold account of “this scientific reality”.
