It seems bizarre, but when I wrote my last column only a month ago, coronavirus was still pretty much a Chinese issue that seemed a long way removed from mainland Europe, let alone the UK. The subjects I touched on included the rise of vegan food, Dry January and the rise and rise of Greggs.

Steve Gotham: Recovering confidence and and accelerating growth in 2020
Encouragingly for most, MCA predicts that 2020 will see stronger net physical increases in store portfolios across the majority of leading operators.MCA’s Operator Data Index includes over 350 branded operators with five or more outlets at December 2019. These stretch across the full spectrum of the market and account for close to 27,000 outlets which claimed modest overall year on year growth of just under 1% in 2019. We are expecting this growth rate to double to 2% in December 2020, with over 500 net new outlets to open, equating to 11 per week.

Goodbody on Domino’s Q4 update
We believe investors will begin to focus more keenly on the health of the core UK and ROI business given DOM’s decision to exit its International markets. For H219 we forecast +3.0% LFL sales growth ex-splits, and +1% incl splits, in the key UK division. At the Q3 stage UK LFL ex-splits was +3.0% (+1.4% incl splits) so we essentially expect a continuation of trends, although we would note the comp is more difficult in Q4 so the group will need a good finish to the year.
