Greggs plans to have returned to full service by September, and plans to launch a “very ambitious national rollout plan” for click and collect and delivery by the end of September - but has also warned of job losses. In a message to staff, CEO Roger Whiteside said its manufacturing capabilities were also returning to normal. It will also be featured in the Just Eat ad campaign at the end of this week, with coverage increasing throughout September. Whiteside also addressed the issue of job security and warned of potential job losses once the furlough scheme comes to an end.

NewsGreggs to reopen 800 stores
Greggs plans to reopen 800 shops for takeaway only on 18 June. All stores will have the by now familiar safety measures, like floor markings to maintain social distancing, protective screens, PPE for staff, a reduced menu, additional cleaning and cash will not be accepted. The business said it had been making a “variety of proposals in return for rent reductions” to landlords and that “all landlords have been informed of our plan to move to monthly rent payments from June. We made our full quarterly rent payment in March as usual.”

NewsGreggs has done the right thing
It’s extremely quiet out there. So quiet that although I live down South I could hear the groans of disappointment from Newcastle this morning. If Horkos was a Geordie he’d be winging his way over to Roger Whiteside’s house today, but of course these are nothing like normal circumstances, so Greggs could and should be forgiven for reneging on its plans to fire up its ovens again. Particularly because behind its decision will be valid concerns for the safety of its staff and its devoted customers.
