Offers of between £70m and £75m are believed to have been made for Pitcher & Piano, put up for sale by Wolverhampton & Dudley. The upmarket 33-strong pub chain is valued at £50m in Wolves' books, but last month bosses privately suggested it might raise more than £60m.

At least four bidders have expressed serious interest. They are thought to include Barracuda Group. Regent Inns, SFI Group and a private equity company. Robert Breare, who is backing Pubmaster's hostile takeover bid, is believed to have approached the bidders about a possible deal.
