Whitbread is preparing to follow the lead of Bass and sell of its brewing operations for £400m.

Privately-owned Belgian company Interbrew, whose biggest beer brand is Stella Artois, is tipped as a possible buyer.

A management buyout led by Whitbread Beer Company managing director Miles Templeman is another option.

In recent years brewing has become less important to Whitbread, which now includes hotel and leisure interests and has recently looked at buying De Vere Hotels.
