Public support has been given to a call for CCTV to be used in food preparation areas, a survey by closed circuit television provider CCTV.co.uk has revealed 68% of people think CCTV cameras in factory and restaurant food processing and preparation areas should be mandatory.

Secretly-filmed images from a slaughterhouse in Thrisk released this week of animals being abused has led to public concerns on the safety and ethics of food preparation and has caused concern among 83% of people surveyed about the safety of their food.

CCTV.co.uk has called for mandatory CCTV systems not just in abattoirs, but in all areas where food is processed and prepared in the UK and the European Union.

“From animal cruelty to filthy factories and corners cut in kitchens – the public wants to see what goes into their food,” said CCTV.co.uk spokesperson Jonathan Ratcliffe.

“The sickening slaughterhouse footage goes to show that these concerns are entirely justified – Thirsk could be the tip of a very unpleasant iceberg”

CCTV.co.uk said: “It’s clear that customers are concerned about food standards, and want the power to know what’s going on put back into their hands,” says Jonathan Ratcliffe, “And the petition with over 92,000 signatures on the government’s website calling for cameras in slaughterhouses is proof of this.”
