The Academy of Medical Sciences has called on the government to increases taxes on alcohol to encourage people to drink less. The group's 'Calling Time' report also calls for tighter restrictions on the amount of alcohol Britons can bring in from abroad. The report suggests that a 10% increase in the price of drink could cut alcohol-related deaths by up to a third. Professor Ian Gilmore, chair of The Royal College of Physicians' alcohol committee, welcomed the report, saying: "We encourage a wide debate on the policy options of proven benefit, such as increasing price and limiting access, unpalatable to politicians though they may be."
