Pub landlords have threatened to stop stocking Boddingtons if Interbrew UK chief executive Stewart Gilliand gets his way and moves brewing from Manchester to Preston, Lancashire, and Magor, South Wales.

The plans have provoked outrage from fans of the pale bitter which has been brewed from the famous Strangeways brewery for more than 200 years. Gilliand says the financial reasons for a move are compelling and would save more than £3.5m a year.

The plans is to move production of keg ale too Magor and Preston but keep producing cask ale Boddingtons in Manchester. The Transport & General Workers’ Union is putting up a fight.
