Bakaliko, a new Greek eat-in and grocery concept, is set to open its first site after securing the Ping Pong unit in London’s Paddington Street, M&C Report understands.

The all-day concept is the brainchild of chefs Nicos Roussos and Georgianna Hiliadaki, who both studied Culinary Arts at the Institute of Culinary Education, Manhattan, New York, and established the Athens based restaurant Funky Gourmet. The c130-cover site will re-open next month.

A Bakaliko is a local grocery which was seen as a cornerstone of Greek communities. Produce was mostly local and fresh such as unpasteurised milk, yogurt and cheese, as well as honey, meat and fish.

The new company said its target is to “revive the wholesome philosophy of these traditional establishments and combine a delicatessen with an eatery that serves and stocks high quality, local and Greek fresh, cured and cooked food”.

Ping Pong placed three sites on the market earlier this year through Seb Howard at CBRE, including its Now takeaway site in Liverpool Street, the remaining two are thought to be under offer.

The group, which is led by Artem Sagiryan, son of the company’s chairman and owner Igor, placed its sites in Westbourne Grove, Paddington Street and Liverpool Street on the market.
