Fast food workers in New York state will benefit from a wage increase after a sate wage board voted to introduce a living wage of $15.

The increase is expected to come into effect in New York City in 2018 and the rest of the state will benefit from 2021.

The change, which will affect around 180,000 fast food workers, follows similar wage increases in Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The state minimum wage is currently $8.75 and the mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has said he wants to push for all city workers to get a higher salary.

Workers in the fast food sector across the US have made headlines over the past year by striking in protest at low wages and poor healthcare.
