M&C Report talks to Paul Campbell, founder of investment firm Hill Capital and former Clapham House Group chief executive, about his best investment, the best piece of advice he’s ever received and identifies the person who has had the most influence in his career. What's the most important action the industry can take to encourage the consumer? Provide superb products, service, environments and value; avoid gimmicks, fads and discounts. What single action could Government make that would make a difference? Make planning changes dramatically easier to achieve and cancel business rates on previously unlet properties – our industry is one of the very few that can genuinely lead the resurrection of the UK’s depressed high streets. What is your top priority? Identifying and investing in great businesses led by brilliant people. What has been your best investment? The first business I ran and invested in was a health and operator in the 1990s from memory the initial investment was £10k; the cheque on exit was a lot bigger! What has been your best business decision? Leaving the relatively safe world of corporate finance to join that business back in 1993. How much has your business changed to combat the recession? I invest in younger businesses, unhindered by pre-2007 legacy issues and led my managers who cut their teeth in the recession. Who is doing something special in the industry? Anyone running a successful small business in such a tough climate and despite the odds being stacked against them. I am consistently bowled over by the financial bravery and determination of the founders of some of the businesses I come across. Most admired brand? It’s a three way tie between Tortilla, Vinoteca and Hawksmoor! Who has been most influential in your career? My first boss (nameless to spare his blushes but not from this industry) taught me how to be forensic and swift in analysing a business opportunity. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? To run three times a week and (generally!) skip pudding if you’re going to have a career in the F&B industry.
