Thwaites is to launch its new concept, Grill & Grain, in November with plans to roll it out if it proves successful, MCA has learnt.

The £1m refurbishment of the Boatyard in Riley Green, Lancashire, will see a micro-brewery incorporated alongside two smokers and an open-plan wood-fired grill which has been imported from Minnesota.

Director of pubs and brewing at Daniel Thwaites, Andrew Buchanan, said: “This is a really exciting development for Daniel Thwaites. The whole pub will be refurbished – we will be doubling the size of the outdoor seating area, introducing a new grill and grain concept, completely overhauling the restaurant and refurbishing the bedrooms.

“The micro-brewery is a great addition for us as we will be able to use our brewing experience from Daniel Thwaites that we have built up over nearly 210 years and bring it directly to The Grill & Grain at the Boatyard. It’s going to be great to see this develop and we are really looking forward to the opening later this year.”

The venue will open on 11 November. Asked if it is likely to roll out, a spokeswoman told MCA “if it is successful then it’s certainly something we will be considering for the future”.

The company is also refurbishing the Boot & Shoe in Lancaster with a wood-fired pizza offer.
