Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) is expected to announce the disposal next week of more than 600 pub sites to Nomura for about £700m, according to The Observer.
It will sell the outlets at a 10% discount to their market value. The buyer will in return agree to a long-term beer supply contract and S&N will manage the pubs.
S&N is said to be in advanced negotiations to take full control of Central de Cervejas, of Portugal.
Rumours last week suggested it was stalking Bulmer.
