A landlord with only a short time in the licensed trade, Dennis Fearon of the Holystone in Newcastle upon Tyne is the first winner of the Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises' Mystery Visitor Award

The award judges licensees on their pub standards, customer care, bar skills and food skills, and the Holystone scored the highest points in two mystery visits, once during peak hours for drinks and once off-peak for food.

Dennis and his wife Susan said they were very pleased to win the award as they are both new to pub management. Fearon, who worked in local government for 12 years, said: "The Holystone was always my local and when the chance came to run my favourite pub I decided to go for it."
