A group of 21 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling on the government to cut alcohol duty on draught beer and cider to help pubs. The petition described pubs and clubs as a “vital part of communities” and said that the tax system should “recognise the need to support pubs and clubs whilst not encouraging increases in off-trade consumption”. The MPs argued for the need for different rates of duty for draught and packaged beers and ciders to be introduced in the next Budget. The EDM was submitted by David Hamilton, the Labour MP for Midlothian and a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and the Members Clubs Group.
