The Charter Group announced that 99% of the pub companies that responded to its Next Steps survey backed the Public Places Charter as the best basis to resolve the smoking issue.
Nick Bish, the chairman of the Charter Group, said: "The huge response to this survey proves further just how committed the industry is to resolve this issue."
The survey attracted responses from 75 pubcos, representing almost 30,000 pubs.
Data from the survey will be used to inform discussions with the Department of Health and other government departments, which are thought likely to take place over the next few weeks.
