Marston’s strikes deal with Brains
Marston’s has announced a deal that will see it operate 156 Brains pubs in Wales. The combination of leased and management contract arrangements consists of a freehold estate of 86 managed and 55 tenanted pubs, together with a leasehold estate of 15 managed pubs and bars. It employs around 1,300 people. Marston’s already has 106 pubs in Wales but plans to continue to operate the existing 156 Brains pubs under the Brains brand. Marston’s will operate the 141 freehold pubs on a leasehold basis from February 2021, with rent chargeable from April 2021. The majority of these will be on long lease agreements of 25 years. The deal is set to complete in February 2021.

Tim Martin: Government relying on ‘false information, rather than truth’
Wetherspoons chairman Tim Martin has accused the government of relying on “false information, rather than truth,” leading to “inevitably poor outcomes.” In an update on the London Stock Exchange, Martin said that over 50 million pub visits had been registered at Wetherspoons sites using the track and trace system, and there have been no outbreaks reported in the company, highlighting the “faulty” nature of government sources of information.

Government accused of siding with landlords in pubs code review
The government has been accused of siding with pub landlords over tenants in its pubs code review completed last month, The Times reports. Business secretary Alok Sharma has been told by group’s representing about 7,000 tenants that the review “promised so much and delivered so little,” leaving publicans exposed to the impacts of the coronavirus crisis. Responding to the evaluation last month, British Beer and Pub Association CEO Emma McClarkin praised the government’s recognition that the code doesn’t require fundamental changes.

Deltic files for administration
Nightclub operator Deltic has filed a notice to appoint administrators. The group, which owns late-night brands including Pryzm and Bar and Beyond, announced its intention to sell in October, but has been as yet unable to secure a buyer. Over the last few weeks, private equity firms Greybull Capital and Aurelius emerged as interested parties in the group, but Scandinavia bar operator Rekom Group has since come to the fore as the preferred bidder to buy Deltic through a pre-pack administration. It’s understood that any deal could see the permanent closure of some of its 52 sites.
