M&C Allegra is once again teaming up with leading advisory firm AlixPartners to identify the top 50 private firms with the fastest-growing profits in the UK eating and drinking-out sector.

The inaugural AlixPartners Growth Tracker, launched in April 2012, saw French brasserie brand Côte top the annual index and claim the Fastest Growing Profits Company prize at the Retailers’ Retailer of the Year Awards. The business was subsequently acquired in a c£100m deal by CBPE in 2013 and earlier this year chained hands again when BC Partners paid c250m to own the fast-growing group.

Last year, the Ivan Schofield-led Ed’s Easy Diner, which is currently generating private-equity interest, took top spot with a CAGR of 127%. Between Ed’s and Côte, BrewDog, the fast-growing Scottish brewer and bar operator, claimed the top spot with a three-year profit CAGR of 193.3%.

AlixPartners partner Paul Hemming said: “It’s clear that the annual AlixPartners Growth Company Index has become the most meaningful proxy for identifying the eating and drinking out market’s star companies, both big and small. We are therefore pleased to be partnering with M&C Report to uncover 2016’s top performers, and look forward to revealing who is delivering sector-leading growth, and who will follow in the footsteps of luminaries such as BrewDog, Cote, and Ed’s Easy Diner.”

The Tracker is not just about small growth companies that have hit their stride. It is a list of all manner of eating and drinking-out businesses. The presence of Nando’s, Caffè Nero, TGI Friday’s and Pret in this year’s list showed there are some big businesses leveraging powerful brands, while the inclusion of Admiral Taverns and Stonegate in the top 10 highlights the pub sector’s current renaissance.

Today, we begin identifying the new profit-growth stars, and look forward to updating the market in March.
