Sushi Gourmet, the Hana Group brand which operates concessions from Sainsbury’s supermarkets, has opened 20 outlets in the last 10 months, with a further 25-30 planned for each year going forwards, MCA has learned.

The concept, led in the UK by Jason Danciger, is under the same global food group as Genji, Sushi & Robata, Wok kitchen and My Sushi.

Danciger told MCA that Genji, a sushi operation at nine Whole Foods in in UK, had enjoyed positive like for like growth, with a number of new look for the UK, and a number of innovations.

He said: “We have developed and launched a new branded look and feel with a host of innovations from sushi donuts to edamame dips and from modern Hawaiian poke recipes to hot displays selling popular items such as Katsu chicken curry.”

He said high end restaurant Sushi & Rabata had also enjoyed like for like growth with a new menu and wine list and new Japanese street food range coming out in the summer.

Restaurant Wok Kitchen was equally in growth with plans to expand and opening a second branch in Paris in July.

Danciger said: “The Sushi Gourmet partnership with Sainsbury’s is flourishing with 20 outlets opened in last 10 months and 25-30 planned for each year going forwards.

“Our social media reach outstrips a number of high street operators already and customers are voting positively with their feet. Huge success and still taking country by storm a food trend that continues to explode hitting new demand for quality, fresh, exciting & healthy food offer.

“To cope with all of this our University of Sushi in Leadenhall Market is flourishing training new teams in art of sushi and selling direct to customers.

“I have just hit my first year anniversary and it has been a whirlwind year with heaps of growth, we have tripled the group already in terms of sales and likely to repeat that & more over next year.”
