Ministers have called on the government to increase tax on super-strength lager, according to reports. A group of more than 50 cross-party MPs led by Battersea MP Martin Linton have argued that lager containing higher volumes of alcohol should be taxed at a higher rate. The move came as supermarkets and off-licences in London’s Westminster borough removed super-strength lager and cider from their shelves as part of a council-led initiative to tackle street-drinking. Several supermarket chains have also said that they were willing to limit access to alcohol in their outlets. ASDA yesterday announced plans to ban sales of alcohol at its stores between midnight and 6am from 7 April, as well as a crack down on underage sales.
