John Grogan MP, chairman of the All-Parliamentary Beer Group, has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) supporting the British Beer and Pub Association’s (BBPA) “I’m Backing the Pub” campaign. The I’m Backing the Pub campaign aims to promote the positive aspects of the pub, lower tax and burdens on pubs and beer and restrict new legislation in favour of enforcing existing laws more effectively. In the motion he says that "pubs lie at the social heart of communities across the country, employ more than half a million people across the UK, and provide an important contribution to national income". He adds: “With more than 50 pubs closing every week it is vital that the government, industry, local authorities and others work together to support a quintessentially British institution and Britain's national drink as part of efforts to enhance community life and promote economic recovery.” The BBPA launched the campaign at the end of last year.
