Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) co-founder Michael Hardman has been presented with an MBE at Windsor Castle. Hardman, who created and edited both the best-selling Good Beer Guide and Camra’s monthly newspaper What’s Brewing, said the Queen talked to him about the brewing industry and recalled the late John Young, chairman of Young’s Brewery in South London. Hardman, whose MBE was awarded “for services to the Campaign for Real Ale and the brewing industry”, was Young’s head of public relations for 27 years. He also devised and handled PR programmes for the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association (now the BBPA), the Association of London Brewers and most recently SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers. He was one of the four founders of Camra in 1971 and he popularised the term real ale, which is now in everyday use.
