Spirits are tipped to go up £1 a bottle in Chancellor Alistair Darling’s first Budget this month, with another 20p on wine as part of Labour’s war on binge drinkers, according to The Sunday Express.
Tory MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, chairman of the All Party Wine and Spirits Group, accused the Government of going too far. He branded the increase on wine as an “easy option” and a tax on “middle-class drinkers”, claiming it would do nothing to stop drunken crime on the streets.
