France has announced plans to ban the sale of alcohol at petrol stations across the country, as part of a clampdown on drink drivers. François Fillon, the Prime Minister, said that the ban was targeted at young people who were found to be increasingly buying alcoholic drinks from petrol stations because it was cheaper than in nightclubs. Alcohol was reported to be the main cause of accidents this year in France, with 46% of road deaths of people aged under-24 blamed on drink driving. The ban is part of a package of measures introduced by the government to reduce road fatalities from 4,600 a year to 3,000.
