Ken McMeikan, the chief executive of the high street bakery chain Greggs, has revealed he aims to take the company international. McMeikan, who is only the company’s third chief executive since the company since John Gregg founded the family run bakery in the 1930s, admitted however that the ambition is a long term goal. He said: "The growth opportunity for Greggs is quite huge. The shop growth is really just one part of the growth opportunity. I believe Greggs has the opportunity to expand internationally.” The ambition was revealed in The Independent as Greggs prepares to bid for some of the sites of the failed First Quench estate and after the company declared it wanted another 600 sites in the UK. Greggs currently has more than 1,400 UK stores but it closed its operation in Belgium earlier this year.
