Burger King was won plaudits online after urging customers to order from its arch-rival McDonald’s.

In a marketing message asking consumers to support the eating out industry, Burger King UK also namechecked Domino’s, Pizza Hut, Five Guys, Greggs and Leon.

The message read: “We never thought we’d be asking you to do this, but restaurants employing thousands of staff really need your support.

“So if you want to help, keep treating yourself to tasty meals through home delivery, takeaway or drive thru. Getting a Whopper is always best, but ordering a Big Mac is not such a bad thing.”

The viral ad was reposted and liked tens of thousands of times on Twitter, winning praise for its spirit of community.

It is the latest in a long line of ads from Burger King referencing its rivalry with McDonald’s, though this one was notable for its more conciliatory tone.
