Carlsberg has agreed to sell the Wrexham lager brand to a Welsh MP for £1. Clwyd South MP Martyn Jones, a former microbiologist in the brewery's laboratory, said: "They didn't have any plans for it and they agreed to sell it to me for a pound in January of next year. "I'm hoping to interest somebody locally to brew Wrexham lager in Wrexham again as a microbrewery, but hopefully it will grow up. "It is an emotional connection because Wrexham has a lot going for it but there is not anything really, apart from the lager, that has the name attached to it." Wrexham Brewery opened in 1883 and was one of the earliest dedicated British lager breweries. It shut in 2000.
