Average spend at pubs during the dinner occasion has seen a strong increase, despite the challenge for operators to grow share of visits at this day-part, according to MCA’s latest Pub Brand Monitor.

The data for Q3 2019 (July to September), has shown that spend at dinner has increased by 5% on the same period last year, to £20.99 per head per visit, on average.

All Bar One has performed particularly well, seeing the largest increase in spend at dinnertime across the year, from £32.40 to £39.26, but growth has stabilised since Q2 this year.

Average pub spend at lunchtime has also increased, to £12.62 (+2%), since Q3 2018, but has been flat at breakfast and snack occasions.

While total dinner participation, frequency and spend have all increased since this time last year, the increasing popularity of fast food outlets as a destination of choice for dinner has seen pub operators struggle to grow this day part in terms of share of visits, which are down 0.6pp since last year at 28.5%.

Snack occasions have seen the strongest growth in share of visits, up 1.8pp to 9.5%.
