Restaurants have just 16 minutes to serve an average customer before they walk out, new research has shown, while casual dining pubs such as JD Wetherspoon and Harvester have to be even quicker, with 13 minutes before someone will go elsewhere.

At the bar you’ve got eight minutes to serve a drink, but it’s only six minutes for a coffee and seven minutes at a McDonald’s or Subway.

The impatience of the British is revealed in a survey into the impact of waiting times among 5,000 people conducted by Peach Factory for EPoS supplier Omnico.

“Whether diners are waiting to be seated, looking for the waiter to take their order or simply in a queue, they have a limit,” commented Omnico chief technology officer Steve Thomas. “A lengthy wait can impact loyalty and customer experience.”

The survey results also showed that women have greater endurance than men when waiting for food or drink, while the East Midlands is home to the most patient, followed closely by London. Welsh diners have the itchiest feet
