Nandos leads outlet share

Nando’s is expected to reach an 11.7% share of the branded restaurant market in 2022, with its strong delivery trading putting the business in a robust financial position.

The grilled chicken brand is expected to grow its outlet numbers by 4% in 2022 to reach 465, according to Lumina Intelligence’s UK Eating Out Market Report 2022.

According to the analysis, second-placed Pizza Express is expected to remain flat in terms of outlet numbers at 375, while its shar of the market segment is marginally down versus 2019 by 0.3ppnts,

Meanwhile third placed Pizza Hut Restaurants is down 7.9% in outlet numbers to 198, as parent company Heart with Smart converts locations to Itsu under a franchise deal.

Wagamama was placed fourth, growing by 3.8% to reach 165, as its parent company The Restaurant Group converts underperforming Frankie & Benny’s sites to the popular pan-Asian brand.

Prezzo is fifth at 145, followed by Italian casual dining contemporary Zizzi at 130.

Overall, the top ten saw outlet growth of 0.7% versus 2021, while its share of the overall branded restaurant market was up by 0.7ppnts.

Lumina said the strongly performing brands such as Nando’s and Wagamama were both quick to adopt digital tools like cashless ordering, and have strong delivery credentials.
