Whitbread hatchet men are set to go to work on Beefeater and Cafe Rouge, according to Financial Mail on Sunday. The group is expected to axe its Beefeater pub restaurant chain after strategic review recommendations are made within the coming months.

Cafe Rouge is expected to be whittled down by about half and unwanted sites sold or converted to other formats such as Costa Coffee. But the Beefeater properties are likely to be retained because they are some of the biggest and best in the group's portfolio. Nearly 100 of them are on sites that also have a Travel Inn.
