Paul Walsh, the former chief executive of Diageo, is in advanced talks to become the next president of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), one of the UK’s leading independent employers’ organisation, according to Sky News.

It reports that the CBI is in discussions with Walsh about replacing Sir Mike Rake in one of the most prestigious roles in British business when his term expires in June.

Sky News said that the talks with Walsh, who stepped down from Diageo in 2013 and is currently chairman of Compass, are at an advanced stage but have not yet resulted in a formal offer of the role.

The appointment of a new president is subject to formal approval from the CBI’s board and a number of the organisation’s committees.
