De Vere Group has put its troubled Tavern Group drinks distribution business up for sale. Several expressions of interest are understood to have been received for the distributor, which supplies pubs, hotels and off-licences.

The business has a turnover of £200m a year. It is likely to be sold at a discount to its net asset value of £30m. Venture capitalists, drinks groups and other distributors are expected to be interested. Speculation is rife that the new slimmed-downed De Vere could be swallowed up by a larger operator such as Whitbread
