The Alchemist, the Palatine-backed bar and restaurant concept, is to double up in Birmingham, MCA understands.

The Simon Potts-led group has secured the former Le Monde site in the city’s Brindley Place. It joins the existing site in Colmore Row, which opened in August 2016.

With that venue showing like-for-like sales up 8% over the festive period, the group believes the demand is there for a second site.

The opening is part of a planned four for 2019, with sites already secured in London’s Old Street and Embassy Gardens and one more under negotiation.

The currently 14-strong group also revealed that like-for-like sales in its core estate (those opened pre 2016) were up 3% over the five week festive period. December also delivered record EBITDA at site level of £1.2m.

Managing director Simon Potts said: “We’ve got a strong track record of doubling up in the big cities without cannibalising – it’s a key tool for onward expansion.

“Brindley Place is a strong pitch with a healthy mix of corporates, tourists and established dining and drinking – so, it will be a great foil to our much loved Colmore Row venue in the heart of the city.”
