Five Guys, the popular US burger chain, has secured a site at the Meadowhall shopping scheme in Sheffield.

The 23-strong group has secured a 3,162sq ft unit on a 10-year lease at the scheme for an opening later this year. At the same time, both Wagamama and Nando’s have upsized to larger units at the centre, which is set to undergo a £50m internal refurbishment to celebrate its 25th birthday.

Five Guys, which this week opened in Nottingham, has openings in London’s Villier’s Street, Ealing, Cardiff and Glasgow’s Braehead lined up for this spring.

It hopes to add 22 units in total across the country this year.

The group, which launched in the UK in the summer 2013, has secured a site in Southampton and is also thought to be close to taking a site in Milton Keynes.

It hopes to eventually operate 175 to 200 “high volume sites” in the UK and plans to launch in Continental Europe over the next 18 months.

The refurbishment of Meadowhall is set to commence in autumn 2015 and will be completed by the end of 2017. The extensive works will create distinct districts within the centre, each with a different finish including wood and punctured metal.
