Cider maker Thatchers has re-opened the Railway Inn, adjacent to its farm in Sandford, north Somerset, as its first managed pub.

The pub – which the company bought about 10 years ago – was previously run under tenancy until Thatchers chose to convert it to a managed site and invest more than £1million redeveloping the site.

The pub includes a traditional bar area with a 62-cover restaurant, garden and patio.

Thatchers managing director Martin Thatcher said: “It’s such a pleasure to be open and welcoming guests. The pub looks amazing, it has such a warm and inviting atmosphere, we look forward to creating a much loved place here at the heart of Sandford where everyone feels at home and at ease.”

He told M&C there are no plans to build a pub estate and he was “happy with one”.

Outside, the original railway signals from the old Sandford railway line have been worked into the design of the front of the pub, together with two oak vats that house cycle racks.

The bar is fully stocked with Thatchers bottled and draught ciders, as well as spirits, beers, ales and lagers.

Warren Zilch from the Fishermans Cot in Devon has been appointed as general manager, while Matthew Hampshire is head chef serving up a menu of regional and seasonal ingredients with a strong emphasis on quality, taste and sensible prices.

Hampshire said: “Using seasonal ingredients with respect is something I’m passionate about, as is using locally sourced produce. We’ve teamed up with some wonderful producers in and around Somerset, many on our doorstep, who we will be working with for The Railway Inn menu. So you’ll find free range meat from Blagdon Butchers, fresh vegetables from The Ethicurean and local cheeses from Lye Cross, just as an example.”
