Punch Taverns has appointed Duncan Garrood, current president of food at international franchise operator MH Alshaya, as its new chief executive.

Garrood will join the company on or before 15 June.

He has been at MH Alshaya since 2009, with broad responsibility across a retail division of 1,000 franchised outlets, and was previously commercial director of BAA plc, the airport operator.

Punch said: “Duncan has a strong background in the retail and leisure sector and an excellent track record of driving operational performance over a career spanning 31 years in Unilever plc, SC Johnson and BAA plc.

As previously announced, when Garrood joins Punch, executive chairman Stephen Billingham will revert to the role of non-executive chairman.

Billingham said: “Duncan is an exceptional individual who will strengthen the senior team at Punch. He brings a great combination of strategic and operational experience within major organisations. These skills will be invaluable to Punch’s future development. I am delighted to welcome Duncan to Punch and look forward to working with him.”
