After four years of doubt about the future of a derelict cinema in Maidstone, Kent, it appears that it may be turned into a JD Wetherspoon outlet, the town's third.

The ABC cinema closed four years ago after the opening of an Odeon multiplex in the town centre.

JD Wetherspoon has successfully redeveloped a number of cinemas in Manchester, London and Bristol.

The group opened its Muggleton Inn in Maidstone in 1995 and last year it opened the Society Rooms near the town's main railway station.

Wetherspoon's spokesman, Eddie Gershon, said: "We have looked at the site but are not progressing at the moment. It is on the back burner and we will still look at other sites in Maidstone."

Maidstone's town centre manager, Bill Moss, said: "This key part of Maidstone town centre is certainly an embarrassment to everybody connected with the town. To see it developed into a pub would be a vast improvement."
