Charles Wells, the Bedfordshire brewer and pub operator, is trialing a franchise-style agreement that could be rolled out to half a dozen sites this year. The agreement is aimed at increasing turnover by single percentage points at pubs that are already performing strongly. This is in contrast to franchise-style schemes from other operators such as Marstons’ Retail Agreement, which is aimed at raising sales at struggling pubs. Charles Wells head of PR Kate Hempsall said more information about the trial agreement is not currently being disclosed. “It’s very much on trial and at the moment. It’s in one pub and we hope to roll it out to a dozen or so in the next few months. It’s very much about feeling our way and refining it.”
