Former Just Eat CEO David Buttress has made his largest personal business investment to date, in Egyptian food delivery company Elmenus.

The investment will see Buttress, who departed Just Eat in 2017 and is currently a venture partner at global venture capital firm 83 North, gain a sizable minority equity position in the business, and join the Elmenus board.

Egypt’s fastest growing ordering company, Elmenus saw its revenues grow by 300% in 2020. It is predicting a considerable expansion over the next 18 months, which will include the recruitment of 4,000 new drivers, and hopes to dominate the MENA delivery marketplace in the next few years.

The business, currently operating only in Egypt, already has 1.5 million monthly users.

“Elmenus’ exponential growth this past year has been quite remarkable,” said Buttress. “It has been owning the food discovery approach, making it the stronger partner to restaurants as it provides them with more than just online ordering services.

“While Elmenus witnessed a three times growth in 2020 since delivery increased drastically in light of the Covid-19 challenges and more restaurants outsourced their delivering operations, the company is expected to grow 10 times in 2021 as it upscales its product and restaurant offerings. It is an exciting time in the company’s evolution.”
