Middlesbrough mayor Ray Mallon has met with licensees to outline his vision of a 24-hour town which the new licensing act could herald.
He told them he wanted more licensed premise but without the yob culture. He wanted "the right kind" rather than "dowdy pubs".
He wants to do away with cheap drink promotions whereby pubs try to undercut each other.
