    Hawthorn is an ambitious company, that’s something chief executive Mark Davies is very clear on. Speaking to MCA following the group’s half-year financial results, which reported its 700-strong estate had outperformed the market for the six months to 30 September 2020, Davies is in the enviable position of being able to look ahead, and he isn’t holding back in his plans for the business going forward. “We want to be the number one community pub company,” he says. “If anything, the pandemic has endorsed our strategy of focusing on community pubs, and our intention is to keep at it. We have the team to do it and the desire, so watch this space.”

    Hawthorn’s David Lockhart dies

    David Lockhart, co-founder of NewRiver and non-executive chairman of pubco Hawthorn Leisure has passed away. During his career, Lockhart set up three successful business – co-founding Hawthorn and NewRiver with Allan Lockhard and Mark Davies in 2009. He played a key part in developing the group – which now has a portfolio valued at £1.2b – before stepping down as chief executive in 2018.

    NewRiver: Hawthorn integration going well

    NewRiver has this morning reported that Hawthorn Leisure, the 298-strong pub business it acquired in May for £106.8m, is expected to generate at least £3m of annualised operating synergies and that the integration of the business is progressing well.
