Chipotle, the US-based burrito chain, has confirmed it has secured its fifth site in the UK and its first outside central London in Islington. As revealed by M&C Report at the start of this month, the chain has secured a lease on a restaurant unit in Upper Street. The company, which is set to ramp up its expansion in the UK over the next 12 months, currently operates two sites in the capital but has also secured units in St Martin’s Lane and Wardour Street. The new site in Upper Street will open in the second quarter of the year, before the St Martin’s Lane site but after the Wardour Street unit. Rex Jones, executive director, international development for Chipotle Mexican Grill, said: “We are excited to be opening our first restaurant outside of central London, in Islington, planned for the second quarter of 2012. The food culture in the UK is based on local, sustainable and artisanal foods, which are all core values of Chipotle.” M&C Report understands that the chain is in legals on further sites in the capital as it looks to ramp up its rate of expansion in the UK. It is believed that the group, which is led by Jacob Sumner in the UK, is building towards a pipeline of up to 20 sites initially here. Shelley Sandzer is understood to have acted on the latest deal.
