Uber is in early talks to acquire Deliveroo, according to reports.

According to Bloomberg, Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi has made the company’s food-delivery business a top priority ahead of a planned initial public offering next year.

An acquisition price is unknown but a source tells Bloomberg it would need to be “considerably above” Deliveroo’s last valuation of $2bn

The report also stresses the talks could fall apart - in part because Deliveroo and its investors have been reluctant to relinquish independence.

Deliveroo is one of Europe’s biggest startups and last year raised about $480m from investors including Fidelity Investments and T. Rowe Price Group Inc. It is currently available in 200 cities on four continents. However, it does not operate in the United States, Uber’s home market.

A succesful deal would see Uber Eats emerge as the only serious contender to Just Eat for home delivered food in the UK.
