WH Smith, the high street retailer, is set to enter the lunchtime sandwich market by selling a range of sandwiches and snacks in its largest outlets, according to reports. The Independent says the company is set to take advantage of the ethical shopping trend by handing the contract for its entry into the high street sandwich market to Foo Go, which uses locally sourced and organic ingredients to produce its snacks. Three years ago, Foo Go replaced Marks & Spencer, as supplier to WH Smith’s outlets in railways stations and airports, which has led to sales increasing by 50% each year. The company is expected to roll out its sandwich offer into its largest high street stores, which it has admitted in the past to having trouble filling. Two years ago, WH Smith signed a deal with Costa Coffee to place a number of coffee bars into its stores, the company currently operates 20 across its estate of 675 outlets.
