M&C takes five minutes to talk to Richard O’Sullivan, owner of Boost Juice Bars UK, about his dream job; the benefits of a company that straddles two sides of the globe and what the government could do for hospitality

What’s your main business priority for the coming 12 months?

We have a pipeline of new Boost stores to open…and we’re launching a new TD4 Milkshake concept in the early Autumn, but our major focus will be on training and developing our culture further for our 400+ Boosties in the UK.

What is the best marketing campaign you have seen this year?

We ran a “Bin it for Boost” campaign - which saw thousands of people physically bin their drinks, as a swap for a Boost smoothie! Otherwise, Pret’s in-store Marketing takes some beating - it’s very subtle very beautiful and best in class.

Where did you have your best meal this year?

A perk to owning an Australian based business is that we visit Oz frequently -our best meal was in “Mojo” by Luke Mangan -in Sydney - brilliant dishes to share - in a converted industrial warehouse!

Which business in the sector provided the best experience?

I’m not a foodie - but my great pal Marcello Distafano runs/owns San Carlo Group - I get pretty spoilt when I visit their restaurants - fantastic simple Italian food, great atmosphere with the best ever service!

What is your main concern for the sector?

Government driven bullshit .…after 35 years in the industry I’ve yet to experience any real “common sense” originating out of Westminster. Far too much meddling and unnecessary burdens placed on hard working-risk taking employers.

Which other business (any sector) would you most like to run and why?

Manchester United PLC- massively exciting and successful brand globally - and the head office is local!
